Paeonia
suffruticosa
(Cortex
Moutan Radicis, Mu Dan Pi)
Paeonia suffruticosa
is a widely used herb in formulations designed to relieve
spasms and inflammation. As an anti-inflammatory herb Paeonia
is useful for treating fevers, skin rashes, and nose bleeds.
In allergy formula Paeonia helps to soothe local inflammations
while countering the drying effects of other herbs used to
clear runny and sticky phlegm fluids.
Research shows that Paeonia
helps to inhibit histamine release. It also has compounds
shown to have antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic and anti-spasmodic
activity. It’s ability to relieve spasms makes Paeonia
a valuable herb for menstrual pain and traumatic injuries.
The analgesic action of its active ingredients provides benefit
for headaches and other types of pain, including arthritis.
In the old days, the herb was reputed to give vigor to the
body and promote long life if it was taken over a long period
of time.
